Five days of naval reenactments, fireworks, and history across Tongyeong’s harbors — August 12–16, 2026.
For five days in mid-August, Tongyeong turned its harbors and plazas into a living stage for one of Korea’s longest-running historical festivals. The 65th Tongyeong Hansan Great Victory Festival (제65회 통영한산대첩축제) ran from August 12–16, 2026, under the theme “The Admiral’s Sea, the Tears of the War Diary.”
It commemorates Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s decisive 1592 victory at the Battle of Hansan — and the personal weight recorded in his Nanjung Ilgi.

Why This Festival Matters
The Battle of Hansan is one of the three great naval victories of the Imjin War. Admiral Yi’s crane-wing formation (hakikjin) trapped the Japanese fleet near Hansando and secured control of the southern seas. Tongyeong has marked that victory every summer since 1962. The 65th edition kept the core reenactments and added stronger night programming — concerts, EDM, and one of the region’s largest maritime fireworks shows.

Battle of Hansan Reenactment (Aug 14) The centerpiece. Dozens of vessels — including turtle ships, patrol boats, and local boats — recreated the crane-wing formation in the waters off Yi Sun-sin Park and Dangpo. A new Turtle Ship arrival welcome ceremony was added this year.
Tonight Tongyeong Fireworks Show (Aug 15, 21:00–21:30) Held over the water near Hansan Daecheop Square. Promoted as Tongyeong’s largest fireworks display to date.
Victory Echo Concert (Aug 15, 19:30) Main stage at Hansan Daecheop Square with popular Korean singers. Free seating, first-come.

Tongyeong is reachable by intercity bus from Busan, Seoul, Daegu, and Jinju. The main festival zone sits along the waterfront near Gangguan and Hansan Daecheop Square — walkable once you are in central Tongyeong. Expect temporary traffic control around major event times.
