Songdo Central Park: Canals, Moon Boats, and the Green Heart of the New City

Songdo is planned glass and straight lines. Central Park is the correction — about 11만 평 of free urban green with a 1.8 km seawater canal down the middle. Korea’s first major park to run treated seawater through an artificial channel, it is closer to a small urban river than a decorative pond: fish live in it, bridges cross it, and the skyline sits on both banks.

The layout is intentional. Ground rises and thickens toward the northeast; small islands in the water echo a southern archipelago. Named gardens — Sunset, Terrace, Strolling — give you reasons to stop walking. G Tower (Green Climate Fund) sits inside this story, not outside it.

Boats — Especially the Moon Boat

This is where the park stops being “nice for a stroll” and becomes a reason to schedule time.

At the East Boathouse you can rent themed private boats. The one people talk about is the moon boat (문보트) — a crescent-shaped, couple-oriented boat that lights up after dark. About 30 minutes on the canal, with Songdo’s towers and bridges as the backdrop; many visitors plug in music and treat it as a floating night view. Other options include cloud-style boats, flower boats, and family boats (prices often in the ₩39,000–43,000 range per boat for ~30 minutes — confirm on the day). Clear kayaks and pedal options appear in season.

At the West Boathouse, a water taxi runs a scenic loop of roughly 20 minutes at a much lower individual fare — better if you want the canal without renting a whole boat.

Daytime is soft and wide. After sunset the park flips: waterside lights, tower reflections, and moon-boat traffic. That night version is why Central Park belongs on a Songdo itinerary even if you only have one evening.

How to Enjoy This Place

Walk or bike a long edge, then decide: water taxi for a cheap overview, moon boat if you want the postcard memory. Exit toward Convensia, Triple Street, or Gyeongwonjae. If the Songdo Beer Festival is on, keep the day here and the stage night at Moonlight Festival Park — same city, different venues.
