Tongyeong sits on the southern tip of Gyeongsangnam-do, a working harbor city facing the island-dotted waters of Hallyeohaesang. Locals and Korean weekenders call it the Naples of Korea — not for size, but for steep hills, a busy port, and a coastline that rewards slow walking more than checklist tourism.
It is also the city most closely tied to Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s 1592 victory at Hansan. After the festival lights go out, the same plazas, parks, and waterfront paths stay open year-round.

Why Visit Tongyeong
Tongyeong works well as a one- or two-day stop from Busan, or as a longer base for island ferries. The compact downtown links mural villages, markets, and the harbor on foot. A short ride away, the cable car opens a full view of the strait and its scattered islands.
History sits close to daily life here: Gangguan was a naval anchorage, Yi Sun-sin Park looks out toward the battle waters, and the Hansan Great Victory Festival still fills the same streets each August.

What to See
Dongpirang Mural Village A hillside neighborhood of alleys and stairs above the old fishing port. Murals, small cafes, and viewpoints over Gangguan make it the easiest first stop after the central market. Free; still a residential area — keep noise down.
Gangguan & Jungang Market The city’s harbor heart. Walk the waterfront, browse seafood stalls, and try local snacks such as chungmu gimbap and ggulbbang (honey bread). Fresh oysters are easy to find here in season. The plaza and cultural square host events when festivals run.
Yi Sun-sin Park (이순신공원) A waterfront park built to honor the admiral and the Battle of Hansan. Bronze statue facing the sea, coastal deck paths, and open views toward the old battle waters. Free, open year-round. Address area: Jeongnyang-dong, Tongyeong-si.
Tongyeong Cable Car (Mireuksan) About a 10-minute ride up Mireuksan with a boardwalk to summit views over Hallyeohaesang National Marine Park. Go early or after mid-afternoon on weekends to avoid long queues. Address: 205 Balgae-ro, Tongyeong-si.
Island day trips Ferries from Tongyeong Passenger Terminal reach places such as Somaemuldo (lighthouse walk at low tide), Bijindo, and other Hallyeo islands. Check same-day schedules at the terminal.
