Asia’s First International Night Sky Protection Park at Yeongyang

The Ministry of Environment selected the “Night Sky and Firefly Park” in Yeongyang, Gyeongsangbuk-do as an “ecological tourist destination of the month.”

Yeongyang Night Sky and Firefly Park include Yeongyang International Night Sky Protection Park, Firefly Ecological Park, and the upper reaches of Wangpicheon Stream.

Yeongyang International Night Sky Protection Park is the sixth in the world and the first in Asia to be designated by the International Night Sky Association (IDA) on Oct. 31, 2015. The park received the Silver Tier, which is the brightest view in general terrain conditions.

At the Firefly Ecological Park, you can observe and experience grasslands, wetlands, farmland, forests, and river ecosystems as well as fireflies.

Otters and mountain goats, the first-class endangered wild life, inhabit the upper reaches of Wangpicheon Stream, the largest ecological and landscape conservation area in Korea.

If you visit Yeongyang August, you can participate in various activities such as a starlight concert held at Firefly Ecological Park and Observatory, firefly exploration, astronomical observation, tree insect making experience, and light pollution experience.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Environment has selected one place as this month’s ecotourism destination since March this year to promote awareness of natural environment conservation by introducing places where people can experience the special nature of the natural environment.
