July 7th in the lunar calendar ‘Chilseok’
Chilseok (七夕) is a day when Gyunwoo and Jiknyeo meet once a year after crossing Ojakgyo Bridge in the legend of Gyunwoo and Jiknyeo, a folk legend of Korea, Japan, China, and Taiwan.
Korea, China, and Taiwan are on July 7th of the lunar calendar, and Japan is on July 7th of the solar calendar
Based on the solar calendar, August 4th in 2022, August 22nd in 2023, and August 10th in 2024.
When Gyeon-woo, a shepherd in the sky, and Jiknyeo, a granddaughter of Jade Emperor Jade Emperor, fell in love with each other and were lazy without working, the angry Jade Emperor separated the two into the east and west of the Milky Way.
Magpies and crows, who could not see the two men and women longing for each other, flew secretly into the sky on the night of July 7th (7th day) of the lunar calendar every year and set up a bridge where they put their heads together to meet the two.
So the magpie and the crow are both bald, and the tears that the two are happy to meet in the evening come down to rain, and the tears that mourn the separation come down to rain the next day.
It seems that Korea also had this story and custom in the Three Kingdoms period.
This is because among the murals of Goguryeo tombs, the murals of Deokheung-ri tombs in Gangseo-gu, Nampo-si, Pyongannam-do, are vividly drawn that reflect the stories of Gyeonwoo and Jiknyeo.
According to the record, King Gongmin of Goryeo, along with the queen, held a memorial service for Gyeon Woosung and Jiknyeoseong in the palace on the seventh stone day and melted it to the white officers, and when he came to the Joseon Dynasty, he held a feast at the court and conducted the past of Jeolilje to the students of Seonggyungwan.
In the 15th century, Ojakgyo Bridge originating from Chilseok was built in Gwanghallu, Namwon. In Chunhyangjeon, this Ojakgyo Bridge appeared as a place where Chunhyang and Lee Mong-ryong whispered their love.
Gwanghallu is a pavilion in Namwon, North Jeolla Province. It was designated as Korea’s Treasure No. 281 on Jan. 21, 1963.
